I jumped up and rushed to the television. I knew that there was a Christian channel on there somewhere. I would never have watched it in the past, but now I had to hear all about my Savior Jesus. Exactly at the moment that the television came on, a Christian teacher began his broadcast. He was standing beside a chalkboard and picked up a piece of chalk. Looking directly into the camera, looking directly at me on my couch in Killeen, Texas, he began to speak. His teaching went something like this:

Today I am going to teach on how to be born-again, and I will show where these miraculous promises are written in the Bible. I will show how Jesus can forgive your sins and make you brand-new, a new creation. He will give you a new beginning, a new birth, born into His kingdom, born as a new child of God, and His Holy Spirit will begin to live within you.

I watched and listened intently as he explained his numbered list, step by step. It was mostly review, for I had just lived it moments ago. This was a divinely appointed review, orchestrated by the perfect hand of God; the teaching even started at just the precise time that I had switched on the television. I knew that the teaching was true because all those points taught on his chalkboard had just been implanted within me. They were now active and living within me to begin His perfect transforming work within. Indeed, this Bible lesson was speaking of precisely the same God and His Savior Jesus that I had just met only minutes before in my kitchen, and truly this Bible was His Word that was continuing to reveal exactly the same God. I was discovering the truth of God’s words:

…It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4 KJV).

I watched every show that afternoon, losing track of all time, and watching into the evening. All I wanted was to be filled with more; there was so much of Him to get to know. And so it was that I was born again, in the summer of my twentieth year.

As it is promised, in His Word:

[Speaking about Jesus] In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men (John 1:4).

…as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God (John 1:12-13).

[Jesus speaking] “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3).

That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be amazed that I said to you, “You must be born again.” The wind
